What's the most significant event in LGBTQ history in your lifetime (i.e. 2005 to the present), and why?
One of the most significant events in LGBTQIA+ history for me was in 2009 when President Obama federally recognized the celebration of Pride Month. Obama’s recognition of this brought it to public attention more because this was one of the first times it was recognized federally. “[Even though] President Clinton instituted the first Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, it was President Obama who instituted a more inclusive Pride Month celebration in 2009” (National Park Service, https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/pride-in-2000-s.htm). President Obama changed the month to be more inclusive of the LGBTQIA+ community, which then brought some recognition to the different “categories” and helps people to not just think of lesbian and gay people as representatives and the entire LGBTQIA+ community.
